รายงานฯ ระบุว่าเศรษฐกิจดิจิทัลในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้มีมูลค่าทะลุ 1 แสนล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐในปี 2563 โดยมีผู้ใช้อินเทอร์เน็ตรายใหม่เพิ่มขึ้น 40 ล้านคนจากปี 2562 ทำให้ปัจจุบันทั่วทั้งภูมิภาคนี้มีผู้ใช้อินเทอร์เน็ตทั้งสิ้น 400 ล้านคน นั่นหมายความว่า 70% ของประชากรทั้งหมดในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้เข้าสู่โลกออนไลน์แล้ว และคาดการณ์ว่ามูลค่าเศรษฐกิจดิจิทัลในภูมิภาคนี้จะสามารถเติบโตทะลุ 3 แสนล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ ในปี 2568

สำหรับประเทศไทย คาดว่ามูลค่า เศรษฐกิจดิจิทัลจะแตะที่ 5.3 หมื่นล้าน ดอลลาร์สหรัฐ หรือเติบโตขึ้นประมาณ 25% ในปี 2568 แม้ว่าสภาพแวดล้อมทางเศรษฐกิจในปีนี้จะเต็มไปด้วยความท้าทาย ผลการวิจัยระบุว่าเศรษฐกิจดิจิทัลของไทยเติบโตขึ้น 7% เมื่อเปรียบเทียบกับปีที่ผ่านมา โดยจะมีมูลค่า 1.8 หมื่นล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ ในปี 2563 นับเป็นตลาดที่มีเศรษฐกิจดิจิทัลใหญ่เป็นอันดับ 2 ในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ รองจากอินโดนีเซีย

สื่อออนไลน์ (โฆษณา เกม บริการวิดีโอออนดีมานด์ และบริการเพลงออนดีมานด์) ในประเทศไทยยังคงเติบโตอย่างต่อเนื่อง โดยเติบโตขึ้น 20% จากปีที่ผ่านมา และคาดว่าจะมีมูลค่า 4 พันล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐในปีนี้ และทะลุ 7 พันล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ ในปี 2568 คนไทยใช้เวลาออนไลน์ 3.7 ชั่วโมง (ใช้งานส่วนตัว) ในช่วงก่อนโควิด และพุ่งขึ้นถึง 4.6 ชั่วโมงในช่วงที่มีการล็อกดาวน์ และปัจจุบันคงที่อยู่ที่ 4.3 ชั่วโมงต่อวัน ในขณะที่ผู้ใช้จาก 8 ใน 10 ราย เห็นว่าเทคโนโลยีมีประโยชน์อย่างมากในช่วงโควิด-19 จึงทำให้เทคโนโลยีกลายเป็นสิ่งที่ขาดไม่ได้ในชีวิตประจำวันของผู้คนอีกต่อไป
นอกจากนี้ ในรายงานฯ ยังระบุว่าในช่วงล็อกดาวน์มีการเติบโตอย่างก้าวกระโดดของผู้บริโภคบนแพลตฟอร์มดิจิทัล โดย 36% ของผู้ใช้บริการดิจิทัลทั้งหมดในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้คือผู้ใช้รายใหม่ สำหรับประเทศไทยพบว่าผู้ใช้จํานวนมากเริ่มลองใช้บริการดิจิทัลใหม่ๆ โดย 30% ของผู้ใช้บริการดิจิทัลทั้งหมดคือผู้ใช้รายใหม่ และ 95% ของพวกเขาเหล่านี้ตั้งใจที่จะใช้ต่อไปหลังช่วงระบาด ที่น่าสนใจก็คือ ผู้ใช้บริการดิจิทัลรายใหม่เหล่านี้เป็นผู้ที่อยู่ในต่างจังหวัด

การท่องเที่ยวออนไลน์ (ธุรกิจจองโรงแรม ที่พัก และเที่ยวบิน) ในประเทศไทย ซึ่งได้รับผลกระทบอย่างหนักจากการแพร่ระบาดของไวรัสโควิด-19 มีมูลค่าตลาด (Gross Bookings Value) ในปี 2563 อยู่ที่ 4 พันล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ โดยอัตราการเติบโตเฉลี่ยต่อปีลดลง 47% แต่คาดว่าจะกลับมาฟื้นตัวและมีมูลค่าแตะ 1.5 หมื่นล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ ในปี 2568 การท่องเที่ยวออนไลน์ในเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ก็จะกลับมาฟื้นตัวได้เช่นเดียวกัน โดยคาดว่าจะมีมูลค่า 6 หมื่นล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ ในปี 2568
และอีก 2 ภาคส่วนใหม่ที่ได้ทำการวิจัยขึ้นในปีนี้ ที่มีอัตราการเติบโตอย่างรวดเร็วในช่วงการระบาดของโควิด-19 ได้แก่ เทคโนโลยีด้านสุขภาพ (HealthTech) และ เทคโนโลยีด้านการศึกษา (EdTech) ในช่วงพีคของการระบาด แอปด้านสุขภาพชั้นนำถูกใช้งานเพิ่มขึ้นถึง 4 เท่าจากช่วงก่อนการระบาด ในขณะที่การติดตั้งแอปประเภทเทคโนโลยีด้านการศึกษาเพิ่มขึ้น 3 เท่า
นอกจากนี้รายงานฯ ยังได้ให้ข้อมูลอัปเดตในส่วนของบริการทางการเงินดิจิทัล (การชำระเงิน การโอนเงิน การให้กู้ยืม ประกันภัย และการลงทุน) ในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ด้วย โดยระบุว่าผู้บริโภคและธุรกิจเอสเอ็มอีได้หันมาใช้บริการทางการเงินดิจิทัลอย่างที่ไม่เคยเป็นมาก่อน นอกเหนือจากบริการให้กู้ยืมแล้ว มูลค่าธุรกรรมรวมการชำระเงินดิจิทัล (GTV) ในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ ในปี 2563 อยู่ที่ 620 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ สูงขึ้นจากปีที่แล้ว 20 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ และคาดว่าจะมีมูลค่ารวมที่ 1.2 พันล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐ ในปี 2568

Google, Temasek and Bain & Company estimate Thailand’s Internet economy will hit $53B by 2025
Over the past five years, Southeast Asia’s internet economy has experienced tremendous growth and change. But what we’ve seen in 2020 marks the biggest shift yet, as the e-Conomy SEA 2020 report from Google, Temasek and Bain & Company shows.
The region’s internet economy is set to cross $100 billion in 2020, with 40 million people coming online for the first time this year, bringing the total number of internet users in the region to 400 million. That means 70% of the region's population is now online. The report also estimates that by 2025, the region’s internet economy will surpass $300 billion.

For Thailand, the internet economy is expected to reach $53 billion by 2025, re-accelerating to ~25% CAGR. Despite a challenging economic environment, the internet economy of Thailand has been growing at 7% YoY and is expected to reach $18 billion this year, being the second largest Internet economy in Southeast Asia after Indonesia.
e-Commerce has driven significant growth in Thailand and showed the most accelerated growth. For Thailand, e-commerce has grown at 81% since last year to reach $9 billion in 2020 and is expected to increase to $24 billion by 2025. 2020 is the year of e-Commerce in Southeast Asia. The region’s e-Commerce market has grown faster than expected, from $38 billion last year to $62 billion this year, and expected to reach $172 billion by 2025.
Online Media (Online Advertising, Gaming, Video on Demand and Music on Demand) in Thailand also continues to grow at 20% since last year to reach $4 billion and is set to reach $7 billion by 2025. Thais were spending 3.7 hours online (for personal use) pre-COVID, which spiked to 4.6 hours at the height of lockdowns, and now rests at 4.3 hours per day. With 8 out of 10 users viewing technology as very helpful during the pandemic, it has become an indispensable part of people’s daily lives.
The report also shows the exponential growth of digital consumers during lockdowns. On average across Southeast Asia, 36% of all digital service consumers are new to the service due to COVID-19. Meanwhile, in Thailand, a significant number tried new digital services: 30% of all digital service consumers were new, with 95% of these new consumers intending to continue their behavior post-pandemic . Interestingly, new digital users in Thailand are from non-metro areas.
Transport & Food in Thailand declined 12% to $1.1 billion in 2020, despite growth in online food delivery. However, it is projected to grow 45% to $7 billion in 2025.
Online Travel (Flights, Hotels, Vacation Rentals) in Thailand, which has been hit hard by COVID-19, is valued at $4 billion in Gross Bookings Value in 2020, dropping 47% from 2019. But it is expected to bounce back and reach $15 billion by 2025. Similarly, the region’s online travel market is expected to bounce back to $60 billion by 2025.
The report also provides an update on the region’s Digital Financial Services (Payment, Remittance, Lending, Insurance, Investing). Consumers and SMEs have adopted Digital Financial Services like never before. Aside from lending, Digital Payment Gross Transaction Value (GTV) in Southeast Asia is $620 million in 2020. This is an increase of $20 million over the previous year. It is expected to grow to $1.2 billion by 2025.
New to this year’s research are two nascent sectors - HealthTech and EdTech - that have rapidly accelerated during COVID-19. At the peak of the pandemic, leading health apps were being used four times as much as they were before the pandemic and education technology app installations had increased three-fold.
This year’s seismic consumer and ecosystem shifts have advanced the internet sector in unimaginable ways, putting it in a stronger position than ever. Here are the seven main findings for Thailand.
Flight to digital - Internet usage in Southeast Asia (SEA) continues to grow. In Thailand, a significant number tried new digital services during COVID-19.
Online with a purpose - Southeast Asians spent on average an hour more per day on the Internet during lockdowns, while Thais were spending more time on the internet and viewed technology as very helpful during the pandemic.
Resilience in times of crisis - e-Commerce has driven significant growth in Thailand, at 81%. This steep ascendance has largely offset declines in Travel and Transport.
On the path to profitability - Since peaking in 2018, funding for unicorns in mature sectors has slowed. Platforms are now refocusing on their core business to prioritize a path to profitability.
New frontiers - HealthTech and EdTech have played a critical role during the pandemic and adoption has seen a phenomenal increase.
Cautiously optimistic - Investors are doing fewer deals at more attractive valuations, in hope for higher returns in the long run.
What’s ahead - This year’s report shows that the internet sector has become stronger than ever. However, it is important to keep working on key barriers to growth in which talent remains a pressing need.
