Today, we announced our annual Year in Search, a look back at trends, people, topics, and major events that made Thais laugh, lament and learn in 2022. A government scheme took the number one spot for the fourth consecutive year while search interest for entertainment spiked with movies, TV shows and games-related queries making up half of the list.
Here is a snapshot of what Thai people cared about in 2022:
Financial aids remaining top of mind
Although COVID seems to be easing, it continues to impact people’s livelihoods and businesses nationwide, leading to Thai people searching for government campaigns and financial aid schemes. 2 out of the top 10 trending search terms this year are associated with government schemes including “บัตรสวัสดิการแห่งรัฐ” (state welfare card), which took the number one spot, and “คนละครึ่ง เฟส 5” (Khon La Krueng or Let’s Go Halves Phase 5, a co-payment scheme), which landed at #3.
Staying entertained and getting educated
Thais were keen to find ways to relax as 5 out of the top 10 trending searches are related to entertainment including “ใตั หล้า” (Tai La, aka The Giver, a Thai drama) “คังคุไบ” (Gangubai, an Indian biographical crime drama), “ด้วยรักและหักหลัง” (Duay Rak Lae Haklang, aka P.S. I Hate You, a Thai drama), “คือเธอ” (Kue Ter, aka Bad Romeo, a Thai drama), and “Wordle”, a word guessing game which also topped the global list.
Education was another popular topic. “ศธ 02”, an online management system designed to support vocational teachers and students landed at #10, and “Botnoi Voice”, a text-to-speech AI voice generator used by teachers and students came sixth onto the list.
Keeping up with news at home and abroad
Thais also turned to Google for updates on local and international news, with “ข่าวแตงโมล่าสุด”, news about the death of Thai actress Tangmo, topping the trending news list. “ข่าวกราดยิง”, the mass shooting at a child development center in Nong Bua Lamphu province and other events also drew interest. Thais were also interested in events worldwide from the Russia-Ukraine conflict to “ข่าวอิแทวอน”, the tragic news from Seoul.
Getting out and about
Travel is back. Searches for "เที่ยว" (travel) in 2022 grew 53% compared to the same period last year, according to Google Trends data (as of November 2022). For trending domestic destinations, including second-tier cities, the list is led by “กรุงเทพมหานคร” (Bangkok), followed by “สุพรรณบุรี” (Suphan Buri), “หัวหิน” (Hua Hin), “เชียงใหม่” (Chiang Mai), and “ระยอง” (Rayong), respectively. Meanwhile, Asian countries made the list of trending international destinations as they are only a short flight away. “สิงคโปร์” (Singapore) topped the list, followed by “เวียดนาม” (Vietnam), “ลาว” (Laos), “ญี่ปุ่น” (Japan), and “เกาหลี” (Korea), respectively.
As physical events have made a comeback, people can now enjoy the in-person experience of concerts by local and international artists. Searches for “คอนเสิร์ต” (concerts) grew over 135% year-on-year, according to Google Trends data (as of November 2022). “คอนเสิร์ตจัสติน” (Justin Bieber's concert) topped the trending concerts list, followed by “คอนเสิร์ต Kamikaze 2022” (Kamikaze 2022 concert), “คอนเสิร์ตเบิร์ด” (Thongchai "Bird" McIntyre’s concert), “คอนเสิร์ต BTS” (BTS concert), and “คอนเสิร์ต BLACKPINK” (BLACKPINK’s concert), respectively.
Learning how to get things done
Thais also sought to figure out “how to” do things. After the government declared COVID-19 an endemic disease, people were eager to learn how to protect themselves and their families as “วิธีตรวจ ATK” (how to do an ATK test) ranked #1 among the top 10 how-to queries, while “วิธีลงทะเบียนบัตรสวัสดิการแห่งรัฐ” (how to register for state welfare card) and “วิธีรักษาโควิด” (how to treat COVID) took the second and thrid spot, respectively. “วิธีเล่นรูบิค” (how to play a Rubik’s cube) and “วิธีทำข้าวเหนียวมูนมะม่วง” (how to make mango sticky rice) also made the list.
