Thailand’s art forms are varied and, as we recover from Covid-19, many are coming back to open up again for the enjoyment of larger audiences. To inspire your next exploration, Thailand Art Up Close, a new exhibit on Google Arts & Culture created in collaboration with the Art Centre, Silpakorn University, presents a new, unprecedented effort to inspire anyone, anywhere to discover the heart of Thailand’s modern art.
Silpakorn, the cradle of modern art in Thailand
Silpakorn University is an iconic institution for education in the arts, launching the careers of many artists in Thailand. Many of them became household names making accomplishments in the country and beyond. For the first time in the 70 years of the University's history, everyone will be able to explore a selection of 500 masterpieces digitized in ultra-high resolution with the Google Art Camera on Thailand Art Up Close.
Over 500 masterpieces digitized like never before
Thailand Art Up Close is the result of over three years of work to digitize the artworks in ultra high resolution - in Gigapixel format - and bring them together with expert stories and artists testimonies. This represents the largest painting digitization program we’ve undertaken to date in Asia, and one of the largest globally.
Zooming on Thailand artworks' smallest details is an invitation to appreciate what is so special about its roots and uniqueness. Thanks to the Art Camera, exploring the intricate textures that include unexpected local materials is made easy.
Over 20 stories of arts, explorations of details, and protagonists
Alongside the artworks, everyone is invited to discover 21 expertly curated stories and in-painting immersive experiences. Over 300 artists are represented, including Parinya Tantisuk and Pairoj Wangbon revealing their inspirations in their own words.
Google Arts & Culture have partnered with various institutions in Thailand since 2017 including Bangkok Art and Culture Center. This is part of our ongoing effort to share the richness of Thai culture to the world, from modern collections from the Museum of Contemporary Art to the beauty of Thailand’s Front Palace. It’s also part of our long-standing commitment to ‘Leave no Thai behind’ by bridging the digital gap and creating online opportunities for Thai people through our products and content.
