เมื่อมีการเปิดสำนักงาน Google ประเทศไทยเมื่อปีที่แล้ว ผมมักได้รับคำถามจากสื่อมวลชน หรือเจ้าของธุรกิจว่าทำไม Google เลือกมาลงทุนในประเทศไทย เราเห็นโอกาสอะไรในประเทศนี้ ซึ่งผมรู้สึกแปลกใจ

ที่ผมบอกว่ารู้สึกแปลกใจกับคำถามเหล่านี้เพราะคำตอบโดยธรรมชาติของผมคือ แล้วทำไมถึ
งจะเป็นประเทศไทยไม่ได้ ผมเชื่อในศักยภาพด้านความคิดสร้างสรรค์ ของคนไทย และผมมั่นใจว่าการเติบโตของประเทศไทยในอนาคตจะขึ้นอยู่กับศักยภาพด้านนี้ดังที่ไม่เคยเกิดขึ้นมาก่อน

ด้วยการสนับสนุนจากพันธมิตรของเราคือกรมทรัพย์สินทางปัญญา กระทรวงพาณิชย์ เราได้เปิดตัวโครงการ ‘Innovation Thailand’ พร้อมทั้งเปิดเผยรายงาน Innovation Thailand และ Innovation Idols ทั้ง 7 ที่ได้รับการคัดเลือกและรับรางวัลในฐานะ Innovation Idols รุ่นแรกของประทศไทย

Innovation Thailand เป็นการเชื้อเชิญคนไทยให้ตระหนักถึงศักยภาพอันเต็มเปี่ยมของตน และเราหวังว่าเมื่ออ่านรายงานและได้รับทราบเรื่องราวที่สร้างแรงบันดาลใจจากเหล่า Innovation Idols เหล่านี้ของเรา จะเป็นการจุดประกายให้นักนวัตกรรมรุ่นใหม่ของเราก้าวออกสู่ระดับโลก และช่วยกันส่องประกายของประเทศไทย

เราต้องปลดล๊อคการพัฒนานวัตกรรมของเราในทุกภาคส่วนเศรษฐกิจ - กระตุ้นให้คนไทย ในทุกวัย และจากทุกส่วนของประเทศไทย ช่วยกันสร้างวัฒนธรรมของการพัฒนานวัตกรรม ที่ทำให้เราสามารถขับเคลื่อนประเทศไทยไปข้างหน้าได้อย่างต่อเนื่อง  อินเทอร์เน็ตสามารถช่วยให้เกิดนวัตกรรมได้ และยังเป็นตัวเร่งให้เกิดการสร้างนวัตกรรมอีกมากมาย

ด้วยกระบวนการทำวิจัยอย่างเข้มข้น และการสนทนากับเหล่านักพัฒนานวัตกรรมและผู้ทรงคุณวุฒิ หรือผู้นำทางความคิดต่างๆ ทั่วประเทศ รายงาน Innovation Thailand ค้นพบปัจจัยขับเคลื่อนให้เกิดการสร้างสรรค์นวัตกรรมหลัก 4 ประการคือ

  • การเข้าถึงระบบโครงสร้างพื้นฐาน:  จำเป็นต้องพัฒนาการเข้าถึงระบบอินเทอร์เน็ตให้มากขึ้น และพัฒนาระบบโครงสร้างพื้นฐานด้านไอทีให้ดีขึ้น
  • การศึกษาและการพัฒนาทรัพยากรบุคคล:  พัฒนาด้านการศึกษาและทรัพยากรบุคคลมากขึ้น เพื่อทำให้เยาวชนและประชากรวัยทำงานรุ่นใหม่มีทักษะที่แข่งขันได้ในตลาดโลก
  • ระบบการกำกับดูแล:  มีระบบการกำกับดูแลที่โปร่งใสและสามารถตรวจสอบได้พร้อมด้วยกฏหมายคุ้มครองผู้ให้บริการเนื้อหาดิจิทัล

ปัจจัยขับเคลื่อนดังกล่าวนี้สามารถนำไปปฏิบัติได้โดยง่าย ถ้าเรามีการทำงานร่วมกัน  สิ่งเหล่านี้เราสามารถแก้ไขปรับเปลี่ยนได้ . . . 

คุณรู้ไหมว่ายังมีคนไทยอีกกว่า 40 ล้านคน ที่ยังไม่สามารถใช้หรือเข้าถึงหรือได้รับประโยชน์จากอินเทอร์เน็ต  ประชาชนรุ่นใหม่ของเราพร้อมที่่จะก้าวเข้าเป็นส่วนหนึ่งของการจ้างงานระดับโลกและด้วยทักษะ ที่จำเป็นต่อความสำเร็จของพวกเขาหรือไม่?  เรากำลังทำให้นักพัฒนานวัตกรรม หรือผู้ประกอบการชาวไทยสามารถสร้างนวัตกรรมในบรรยากาศ ที่ประกอบด้วยระบบการกำกับดูแลที่โปร่งใสที่ช่วยทำให้เขาเหล่านั้นนำความคิดสร้างสรรค์ของตน ค้นหาแหล่งเงินทุน และออกสู่ตลาดโลกได้หรือไม่?

อินเทอร์เน็ตเป็นระบบโครงสร้างพืินฐานที่มีประสิทธิภาพที่สุดที่เหมาะกับการสร้างสรรค์ การแลกเปลี่ยนความคิด ในขณะเดียวกันก็สร้างสรรค์งานด้วยเช่นกัน  การพัฒนานวัตกรรมเริ่มต้นที่การมีความคิดสร้างสรรค์ ไม่ว่าความคิดสร้างสรรค์นั้นๆ จะใหญ่หรือเล็ก และอินเทอร์เน็ตก็สามารถขยายศักยภาพนั้นๆ ได้  วันนี้ แพลทฟอร์มที่จะนำประเทศไทยก้าวสู่ระดับโลกพร้อมแล้ว คำถามคือเราพร้อมหรือยัง?

Innovation Thailand - An invitation for Thailand to step onto the global stage

Its a funny thing that since our office opened officially in Thailand last year, almost every journalist and business owner that I speak to, invariably asks the question, why Thailand? Why is Google investing in Thailand? What opportunities do we see in this market?

I say its a funny thing because I am always surprised at this question and my natural response is to answer by saying. ‘Why not Thailand?”. I believe in Thailand’s creative potential. And I’m certain that our country’s future growth depends on this creative potential as it never has before. 

Together with our partner, the Department of Intellectual Property Protection, under the Ministry of Commerce, we recently launched ‘Innovation Thailand’, releasing the Innovation Thailand Report and presenting 7 awards to the first generation of Innovation Idols. 

Innovation Thailand is an invitation to Thais to realize their full potential and we hope through the report and the inspirational stories of our Innovation Idols, we can inspire the next generation of Thai innovators to step onto the global stage and shine the spotlight on Thailand.

We need to unleash innovation across all sectors of the economy - encouraging Thais, of every age and from every corner of the country, to help build a culture of innovation that can move our country forward. The internet can enable this innovation; it can also help accelerate it. 

Through extensive research as well as conversations with Thai innovators and thought leaders from across the country, the Innovation Thailand Report identified four drivers:

  • Access & Infrastructure: the need for improved Internet access and IT infrastructure;
  • Education & Human Capital: enhanced education and human capital development that ensures young people and today’s workers have the skills to be competitive in the global market;
  • Regulatory Environment: a transparent and predictable regulatory environment with protections for digital content providers;
  • Distributed Access to Capital: access to funding for Thai entrepreneurs

These drivers are simple, practical things. Things that we can change, if we work together . . .

Did you know there are still over 40 million Thais without access to the internet and the benefits it can bring. Are our future generations ready to join the global workforce and equipped with the skills they need to be successful? Are we making it easy for would be Thai innovators and entrepreneurs to operate within a transparent regulatory environment that helps them take their ideas, find funding for them, and export them to the world?

The Internet is the most effective infrastructure I know for creativity, for the exchange of ideas as well as for the creation of jobs. Innovation starts with an idea, no matter if its big or small, and the Internet amplifies it.  Today, the platform to take Thailand to a global stage is ready, the question is are we?
