วันนี้ถือเป็นวันส่งท้ายปีเก่าตามปฏิทินจันทรคติของจีน ผู้คนเชื้อสายจีนทั่วโลกต่างรวมตัวกันเพื่อร่วมเฉลิมฉลองวันขึ้นปีใหม่ หรือ เทศกาลตรุษจีน กับครอบครัว

Google ร่วมฉลองโอกาสพิเศษนี้ด้วยศิลปะแห่งเงา การทดลอง AI ชิ้นใหม่ที่ออกแบบมาเพื่อฉลองเทศกาลตรุษจีน นักษัตรจีน และศิลปะหุ่นเงาแบบโบราณ

ศิลปะหุ่นเงาเป็นรูปแบบการเล่าเรื่องแบบดั้งเดิมที่ผสมผสานตำนาน ประเพณี ดนตรี ศิลปะ จินตนาการ และงานฝีมือเข้าด้วยกันอย่างงดงามและลงตัว แต่น่าเสียดายที่ศิลปะโบราณนี้กำลังเลือนหายไปตามกาลเวลาอย่างช้าๆ

ด้วยความช่วยเหลือจากเทคโนโลยี เราหวังว่าจะช่วยเชื่อมโยงผู้คนเข้ากับรูปแบบศิลปะโบราณนี้ ภายในงาน World AI Conference เมื่อเดือนกันยายนปีที่ผ่านมา เราได้เปิดตัวโปรแกรมแบบอินเตอร์แอคทีฟที่ใช้ AI เพื่อช่วยให้ผู้คนได้เรียนรู้เกี่ยวกับศิลปะหุ่นเงา แม้ว่าจะเป็นศิลปะโบราณ แต่ผู้คนก็ได้เชื่อมโยงกับศิลปะหุ่นเงาในรูปแบบใหม่ และหลังจากงานครั้งนั้น เราได้ตัดสินใจที่จะนำโปรแกรมนี้ไปเผยแพร่บนแพลตฟอร์มออนไลน์เพื่อให้ทุกคนสามารถร่วมสนุกได้ และในวันนี้เราได้ต่อยอดโปรแกรมดังกล่าวให้เป็นการทดลอง AI แบบใหม่ที่เรียกว่า Shadow Art

Shadow Art เป็นเกมบนเว็บเบราว์เซอร์ที่ให้คุณสัมผัสกับ AI และหุ่นเงาในแบบที่สนุกสนาน เราใช้ TensorFlow.js เพื่อนำสิ่งที่เคยเป็นประสบการณ์ออฟไลน์มาไว้บนแพลตฟอร์มออนไลน์ ซึ่ง TensorFlow.js ช่วยให้การสร้างและฝึกรูปแบบการเรียนรู้ของแมชชีนเลิร์นนิ่งโดยตรงในเบราว์เซอร์ทำได้ง่าย

Shadow Art มีวิธีการทำงานอย่างไร?

ทำมือของคุณให้เป็นเงาตรงกับรูป 12 นักษัตรจีน ผ่านกล้องบนแล็บท็อปหรือโทรศัพท์มือถือ โดยพยายามทำมือให้เป็นเงารูปสัตว์ตามนักษัตรที่คุณเลือก ซึ่งจะปรากฏขึ้นมาบนหน้าจอ เมื่อสำเร็จแล้ว “เงา” มือของคุณที่ปรากฏบนหน้าจอจะเปลี่ยนเป็นรูปนักษัตรนั้นๆ ฟังดูเหมือนจะง่ายใช่ไหม? คุณมีเวลา 20 วินาทีในการทำเงามือให้ตรงกับนักษัตรที่คุณเลือก คุณต้องทำให้ครบทั้ง 12 นักษัตรให้ได้เร็วที่สุดเท่าที่จะทำได้ เมื่อคุณทำสำเร็จแล้ว คุณจะพบกับเซอร์ไพรส์ที่ซ่อนไว้

เกม Shadow Art รองรับ 11 ภาษา รวมทั้งภาษาไทย นอกจากนี้ยังมี Doodle พิเศษบนหน้าแรกของเว็บไซต์ Google เพื่อฉลองเทศกาลตรุษจีนและศิลปะการเล่าเรื่องผ่านเงาแบบโบราณด้วย

Try your hand at the art of shadow puppetry - with help from AI

Today is Lunar New Year eve. Across the world, people are coming together to celebrate the beginning of a new year with family and loved ones.

To mark this festival, we are releasing Shadow Art––a new AI experiment that celebrates Lunar New Year, the zodiac animals from the lunar cycle, and the ancient art of shadow puppetry.

Shadow puppetry is a traditional form of storytelling that beautifully combines legends and traditions, music and art, imagination and craftsmanship. Unfortunately, this ancient art form is slowly dying out.

With technology, we’re hoping to help connect people to this ancient art form. In September last year, we built an interactive installation that used AI to help people explore shadow puppetry. Though it’s an ancient art, people connected with shadow puppetry in a new way, and after the conference, we decided to bring it online so that everyone could play. So today, we’re making it available as a new AI experiment, Shadow Art.

Shadow Art is a web browser-based game that lets you experience AI and shadow puppetry in a playful way. To bring what used to be an offline experience online, we used TensorFlow.js, a TensorFlow library which makes it easy to build and train a machine learning model directly in the browser.

How does Shadow Art work?

You use your hands to form one of twelve zodiac animals from the lunar cycle in front of your laptop or phone camera, trying to match your hand to the diagram on the screen. The “shadow” of your hands on the screen then transform into a shadow puppet animal. Sounds easy, right? Here’s the catch: we turned it into an interactive game where you have twenty seconds to form each animal. The goal is to go through the full lunar cycle as fast as possible. When you unlock all the animals, you’ll see a little surprise we built in.

The new experiment is now available in eleven language varieties, including Thai. Here in Thailand, we’re also celebrating the ancient storytelling art of shadow puppetry with a special Lunar New Year Doodle.
