การติดต่อระหว่างสหรัฐอเมริกากับไทยเกิดขึ้นครั้งแรกในปี พ.ศ. 2361 เมื่อเรือสัญชาติอเมริกันลำหนึ่งเข้าเทียบท่าในกรุงเทพฯ ในเวลานั้นสหรัฐฯ ต้องการขยายการค้ากับเอเชีย ในขณะที่ประเทศไทยกำลังวางแผนรับมือกับการล่าอาณานิคมของประเทศยุโรปที่รุกล้ำเข้ามาในภูมิภาคเอเชียตะวันออกเฉียงใต้ แม้ว่าความแตกต่างทางวัฒนธรรมและระยะทางที่ห่างไกลจะแบ่งแยกทั้งสองประเทศ แต่ไทยและสหรัฐอเมริกาต่างก็หมายที่จะผูกมิตรไมตรีอันดีต่อกัน

ตลอดระยะเวลา 200 แห่งสายสัมพันธ์ระหว่างราชอาณาจักรไทยและประเทศสหรัฐอเมริกา ทั้งสองประเทศได้แสดงให้เห็นถึงมิตรภาพอันแน่นแฟ้นที่มีต่อกันผ่านทางการแลกเปลี่ยนของขวัญอันล้ำค่า เอกสานสำคัญต่างๆ และการไปมาเยี่ยมเยือนกันระหว่างสองประเทศ โดยเอกสารและวัตถุต่างๆ ที่ทั้งสองประเทศแลกเปลี่ยนกันในระยะเวลา 200 ปีที่ผ่านมาได้รับการรวบรวมและจัดแสดงในนิทรรศการ “ของขวัญแห่งมิตรภาพ” (Great and Good Friends) ซึ่งจัดขึ้น ณ พิพิธภัณฑ์ผ้าในสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ   

สนธิสัญญาไมตรีและพาณิชย์ระหว่างราชอาณาจักรสยามกับสหรัฐอเมริกา ร่างใน พ.ศ. ๒๓๗๖ และให้สัตยาบันใน พ.ศ. ๒๓๗๙ ๓๖๖ x ๕๓ ซม. ได้รับความอนุเคราะห์จากแผนกบันทึกทั่วไปของรัฐบาลสหรัฐอเมริกา องค์การบริหารจดหมายเหตุและบันทึกแห่งชาติ

นิทรรศการ “ของขวัญแห่งมิตรภาพ” (Great and Good Friends) ณ พิพิธภัณฑ์ผ้าในสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ แบบเสมือนจริงทาง Google Street View

ในโอกาสเฉลิมฉลองวาระครบรอบ 200 ปีความสัมพันธ์ระหว่างราชอาณาจักรไทยและสหรัฐอเมริกา Google ได้ช่วยอนุรักษ์สมบัติอันล้ำค่าของทั้งสองประเทศให้คงอยู่สืบต่อไป แม้ว่านิทรรศการ ณ พิพิธภัณฑ์ผ้าในสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ จะสิ้นสุดลงในวันที่ 30 มิถุนายนนี้ ผู้ที่สนใจยังคงสามารถเข้าชมนิทรรศการและสำรวจวัตถุโบราณอันล้ำค่าต่างๆ ได้ในรูปแบบออนไลน์ผ่านทาง Google Arts & Culture ได้ตั้งแต่วันนี้เป็นต้นไป โดย Google ได้ร่วมมือกับพิพิธภัณฑ์ผ้าในสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ และคณะทำงานจากสถานทูตสหรัฐอเมริการประจำประเทศไทย ในการสร้างแพลตฟอร์มออนไลน์สำหรับจัดแสดงนิทรรศการที่รวบรวมภาพของวัตถุโบราณกว่า 70 ชิ้นที่มีความละเอียดสูง เพื่อให้ผู้คนทั่วโลกสามารถชื่นชมได้ทางโลกออนไลน์  

และเพื่อให้คนรุ่นหลังสามารถเข้าถึงนิทรรศการนี้ได้ Google ได้ผนวกนิทรรศการดังกล่าวใน Google Expeditions แอปพลิเคชันเพื่อการศึกษาที่ให้ครูและนักเรียนได้ทัศนศึกษาเสมือนจริงยังสถานที่ต่างๆ ทั่วโลก รวมถึงนิทรรศการ “ของขวัญแห่งมิตรภาพ” (Great and Good Friends) ณ พิพิธภัณฑ์ผ้าในสมเด็จพระนางเจ้าสิริกิติ์ พระบรมราชินีนาถ ตอนนี้ วัตถุที่สวยงามล้ำค่า วัฒนธรรม และประวัติศาสตร์แห่งมิตรภาพระหว่างไทยและสหรัฐฯ ได้ถูกเผยแพร่สู่สายตาชาวโลกแล้ว

In 1818, the first recorded contact between the U.S. and Thailand occurred when an American ship docked in Bangkok. At the time, the U.S. wanted to expand trade with Asia, while Thailand was fending off encroaching European imperialism in Southeast Asia. Despite the vast distance and cultural differences between the two countries, a natural affinity emerged between them.

In the 200 years since, these “great and good” friends have demonstrated their amity through numerous exchanges of precious gifts, landmark documents and cultural visits. The records and artifacts of this 200 year old relationship were collected and curated in the “Great and Good Friends” exhibition held at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles.

Take a virtual tour of the Great and Good Friends exhibition at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles using Google Street View.

In the 200th anniversary year of the beginning of this incredible friendship between countries, we’re helping preserve its treasures for the coming centuries. Although the exhibition at the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles wraps up on June 30, with the launch of the Great and Good Friends exhibition on Google Arts & Culture today, it’s now possible to continue walking through the exhibition and exploring the artifacts. We worked with  the Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles and teams at the U.S. Embassy in Thailand  to create an online home for the exhibition, including over 70 artifacts, saving them in glorious, high-resolution detail for the entire world to enjoy online.

And to help future generations access this significant collection, Google Expeditions, our education app, will also feature it as one of their immersive trips so teachers anywhere in the world can take their students on a virtual trip of the Great and Good Friends Exhibition at Queen Sirikit Museum of Textiles. Thailand’s beautiful treasures, culture and the history of its friendship with the U.S. can now be shared with the entire world.
